Release Notes:

Though they now have two guitars, bass, drums and keys/horns, at its heaviest
Howlin' Rain drops the boom of a power trio. Think Cream's sonic punch, the
heaviness of Mountain, the layers of Procol Harum, the overdriven blast of
Vanilla Fudge, echoes of San Francisco Bay Area bands like Oxford Circle and
Kak, and the folk/country influences of early Grateful Dead. Listeners may be
momentarily fooled by the 54-second opener's horn-led suggestion of film noir,
but the album's first full track kicks in with a lengthy instrumental of raging
drums, organ and squalling psych guitar leads. Even the quieter breakdowns are
often only short breathers from the full-on attack, with vocals from Ethan
Miller (also of Comets on Fire) that alternate between raggedly hollered and
moments of Jack Bruce-like tenor. There are a few moments, such the soulful
"Nomads" and "El Rey," that are almost tranquil (at least, in comparison to the
full-on jams), with the guitars giving way to bass, drums and electric piano
before returning for hypnotic solos. The closing "Riverboat" is actually folky
and pastoral, in an electric sense. Throughout the CD Garett Goddard (drums) and
Ian Gradek (bass) provide the sort of musicality that leaves Miller's guitar
free to fly. The instrumental stretches, even when thickened by Mike Jackson's
rhythm guitar and Joel Robinow's organ, still feel elemental. The original
trio's sensibility (as heard on the their self-titled 2006 debut) is still here,
but layered with new instrumental and production complexities.

Korpiklaani - Tervaskanto (2007)

Finnish folk-metal group (you read that right) Korpiklaani's greatest feat is to prove once and for all that there are still uncharted genres out there. This is not to say that there is anything tongue-in-cheek about what they do, and Tervaskanto is a really enjoyable, if sometimes cryptic, album. Korpiklaani ("woodland or forest clan" in Finnish) used to record as Shaman before 2002 and back then offered vocals primarily in the ancient Sami tongue. In recent years, they've taken a few steps toward accessibility by recording in a mixture of Finnish and English. The metal side of the group isn't too dire and a bit misleading (no "doom" or "death" here, despite their Arctic Circle pedigree). It primarily consists of chunky guitar chords welded to genuine and nimble Finnish folk, while the themes tend toward the rustic and debauched. The opener of this album is the fun, upbeat accordion-fueled romp "Let's Drink" (which is perhaps a sequel to the previous album's opener, "Happy Little Boozer," or maybe it's the final flourish in a triptych begun with "Beer Beer," from 2005's Voice of Wilderness). "Running with the Wolves" is actually a very restrained, string-folk tune at times, before it explodes off into a galloping romp (and, no, it's not a feminist tract, but a beer-hall instrumental). The title track of this album is a bit more metal in intention, but there's even more of an argument for punk, and overall Korpiklaani seem to be evolving in a more clearly folk-rock and less metal direction than on previous albums. They also seemed to be paralleling groups from other cultures that have plied rock (or punk) against Celtic or Gaelic strains. All of which is to say this is a lively and upbeat affair and one that should be noted for its top-notch, tight musicianship and engaging arrangements -- not for the novel genre tag. It wouldn't even be outlandish to assert that the group is doing the something for Finnish folk music akin to what Fairport Convention once did for the folk music of the British Isles.

Drum'n'bass deviant Amon Tobin fuses hip-hop and jazz compositional ideas with the bustling rhythms of hip-hop and jungle and the bent sonic mayhem of ambient and dub. Unlike rolling junglists such as Alex Reece and Wax Doctor, however, who draw from a softer, "cooler" brand of jazz, Tobin aims to maintain the heat of bop and free jazz, pairing spry, galloping basslines with complex trapset orchestration and shrill, screaming horns.

A native of Brazil, Tobin moved to the U.K. in the mid-'80s, when hip-hop was beginning to take hold and the rhythms of breakbeat electro-funk were replacing reggae and punk as the underground youth music of choice. Tobin didn't begin seriously making music until college, but his passion for the sampler, as well as the support and encouragement of no less of breakbeat scientists than those at Ninebar and Ninja Tune, immediately convinced him to forgo a university career to focus on music (he was a few years into a photography degree when he put the whole project on hold).

Tobin began releasing material with a trio of EPs (a pair for Ninebar, as well as the Creatures EP for Ninja Tune), and a full-length LP as Cujo (Aadventures in Foam on Ninebar). Bricolage, his first LP under his own name, was released in mid-1997. Beginning with 1998's Permutation, Tobin full-lengths followed every other year, including Supermodified in 2000 and Out from Out Where in 2002. A live performance was recorded for the Solid Steel series and released in 2004, and Tobin reached his highest profile when he recorded the soundtrack to a Tom Clancy video game, Splinter Cell 3. The studio album Foley Room, from 2007, relied on field recordings from Tobin and others, and featured performances by Kronos Quartet. He has also performed remix and production work, for fellow native Brazilians Bebel Gilberto and Airto Moreira as well as Ninja Tune compatriots Coldcut and the Irresistible Force.

Released in early 1969, Neil Young's first solo album is essentially an extension of "Broken Arrow" and "Expecting to Fly," his two most inventive contributions to Buffalo Springfield. Jack Nitzsche arranged and produced several of the tracks, fusing haunting strings and even funky female backing vocals to acoustic-oriented songs like "Here We Are in the Years" and "The Old Laughing Lady." "The Loner" is the one song from Neil Young to achieve classic-rock immortality, but "I've Been Waiting for You" is almost as good, and the rambling "Last Trip to Tulsa" presages the dark acoustic epics of On the Beach. Though it's not an essential album, Neil Young-like the man himself-is rarely less than interesting. --Dan Epstein
